Large masonry on the roadside, often at the
bottom of a hill, the "Bégudo" was an appreciated halt by the coachmen
and horses, which could be refreshed at their leisure.
Word of Provence, "Bégudo" means action of drinking, place where cattle
is watered, and it becames by extension a frequent place name in our
area. The "Bégudos" were also relaies where horses were changed; there
were one of them on the right and one on the left of the road, almost
at the same place, not to make the hitches crossing.
La Bégude POULON, old "relais de poste", was created about the 12th century. Each family which followed one another increased the construction until today. At the end of the 17th century, my ancestor Jean AYMARD built the bodies of building to increase the "relais de poste".
The family POULON is on the commune of Vers since 1492. Anne and Valence POULON married at that time FABRE'sons and in 1712 Jean POULON married Jeanne AYMARD.
I am the descendant that welcomes you today.
